Maybe the more reclusive you are, the more you seem out-of-touch, the more you look like you're outside the group, that's when people need you to take pictures. A person who seemed to be in no relation, no significance in a group of people would always be needed to take pictures of the closest group of people. Why? Because the person's existence is of no importance for the group of people's memory. Nobody needs to remember, nobody wants to remember.
You could look at a picture of smiling faces, all together in a good moment in time but no one wonders who is the person behind it, taking the picture, volunteering to be left out.
And when it's done, the owner takes back the camera and the person is forgotten.
Until someone else wants a picture with their group of friends. Then, another click.
You know, you could just use a tripod stand.
